Visitors:
The final day of the 2015 Festival of Hawks brought out many people. We had
a pretty good number of visitors on the tower, including a group of
students. Thanks to all of the spotters on the tower and the volunteers on
the ground who made the 2015 Festival of Hawks a great success.
Weather:
A cool morning with north winds led to a very warm and sunny afternoon.
The winds were predicted to be out of the northeast for the day but they
shifted in the late afternoon and ended up out of the southwest. The high
temperature was 26C. It was partly cloudy for most of the day making the
spotting a little easier as the hawks gained height.
Raptor Observations:
Broad-winged Hawks took advantage of the north winds and were streaming
over the tower for a good portion of the day. Sharp-shinned hawks and
American Kestrels were also on the move today. A total of 10 species of
raptors were counted.
Non-raptor Observations:
Blue Jays have started to move through in large groups. 2450 were tallied
on today's count. American Goldfinches were also passing through with a
total count of 310. A good mix of warblers were also present near the base
of the tower at the start and end of the count period. A Red-headed
woodpecker cruised past the tower in the late afternoon. A high number of
Monarchs continued to pass through.
Predictions:
Sunny with a light northeast wind. No precipitation is expected. Should
be another good day for migration.
