You never know who you'll meet on the tower! Ana and Herb (sorry about the spelling) came up again today and we had a few other local visitors as well. Weather: A clear morning with a slight breeze from the North turned into a sky full of beautiful wispy clouds and a wind (up to 11kph) from the ENE. Raptor Observations: The first birds of the day were a few Sharp-shinned Hawks and Northern Harriers that were far too high in the sky for that time of morning. Things picked up slowly, with more Sharpies and a few American Kestrels in the morning. Later on a scattering of Broad-winged Hawks, Red-tails, and Turkey Vultures crossed more often on the north side of the marsh. A highlight for the day was a Peregrine Falcon high over the tower that soared by. Non-raptor Observations: 7 Chimney Swifts, 1 hummingbird, 2 Barn Swallows, 58 Cedar Waxwings and 52 American Goldfinches migrated past the tower throughout the day. Our big numbers came from Blue Jays again, totalling 14,030. Bob Hall-Brooks had the chance to bring a few birds that he had banded up to the tower, including an Eastern Whip-poor-will and some passerines. It was a great opportunity for our visitors to see them up close! Dragonflies: 3 Twelve-spotted Skimmers, 1 Black Saddlebags, 1 Common Green Darner. 20 Monarchs. See today's eBird list http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S25159629 Predictions: Fog in the morning, clearing up to a sunny day with temperatures up to 24C. Winds should come from the east all day. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jenna McDermott ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
