Some small patches of sun finally made it through in the afternoon and the temperature went up to 16C. Visibility was impaired a by a heavy haze layer past the marsh. Winds were from the S and SE. Raptor Observations: On average, just over 2 raptors per hour showed up through the day. 9 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 2 Cooper's Hawks, and 6 Northern Harriers flew far from the tower. A juvenile harrier perched on a bush in the middle of the marsh for a few minutes and allowed for nice looks through the scope. The only buteo of the day was so far in the haze that it was unidentifiable. Turkey Vultures didn't show up until noon and then started weaving in and out of the haze for the rest of the count. Non-raptor Observations: Mixed flocks of blackbirds as well as flocks of Common Grackles, Red-winged Blackbirds, American Goldfinches, Blue Jays, and American Crows were prevalent and very active through the day. Over 100 American Robins arrived mid-day in a large group that eventually split into smaller flocks. A seemingly endless stream of Tree Swallows came over the tower mid-morning, heading towards the SE, while at the same time, more Tree Swallows were feeding over the marsh. A quick moment of excitement brought a snipe over the tower and shooting down onto the island in the middle of the pond to the SE of the tower. 18 Killdeer and 1 Greater Yellowlegs flew past. See today's eBird list http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S25499973 Predictions: It's looking like it should be a great day for birds tomorrow with moderate NW winds all day and a partly cloudy sky in the morning (perfect for spotting birds). ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jenna McDermott ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
