Highlights: A quick summary today. Highlights of the week include CACKLING GOOSE, 3 species of SCOTER, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, SANDHILL CRANE, and VIRGINIA RAIL. Waterfowl numbers have increased throughout the area with several thousand GREATER SCAUP now regularly seen at Prince Edward Point. Approximately 2000 REDHEAD were seen at Button Bay, Wolfe Island on 23rd. BUFFLEHEAD are now back, albeit in small numbers but a CACKLING GOOSE also at Button Bay, on 20th, was a good find. All three species of Scoter have been seen this week, with female BLACK SCOTER at Invista, Wolfe Island, Prince Edward Point and Amherst Island. TUNDRA SWANS are widespread on Wolfe Island, and just beginning to be seen in Kingston. The HUDSONIAN GODWIT was seen on 18th at Martin Edwards Reserve, Amherst Island in the presence of BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and DUNLIN. A SEMIPALMATED PLOVER was at Big Sandy Bay, Wolfe Island on 22nd. A VIRGINIA RAIL was heard at Little Cataraqui CA, Kingston on 22nd. Three SANDHILL CRANES were also seen at Martin Edwards Reserve on 18th, as well as a NORTHERN GOSHAWK and LAPLAND LONGSPUR. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS have been seen on a couple of dates on Wolfe Island. The first SNOW BUNTING of the season was seen at Big Sandy Bay, Wolfe Island on 22nd. Good numbers (40+) of HORNED LARKS were also seen on Wolfe Island on 23rd as well as over 60 AMERICAN PIPITS. Please note that the ferry situation continues in our area and the expected return date of the Wolfe Islander is now 'unknown'. This means that the Wolfe Island, Amherst Island and Glenora ferries continue run at half capacity. Unfortunately, Amherstview Sewage Lagoons remains closed and is now unlikely to reopen before December. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy <http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy. pdf> . Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be distributed on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, thanks to all those who have submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
