Visitors:
Today we had the OFO outing to Hawk Cliff and there were about 15
individuals that made it to the hawkwatch. Unfortunately, the conditions
just weren't favourable for migration in the hawkwatch area as the strong
SW winds blew any migrants well inland. Thanks to all those who made the
trip...and let's hope many of them can make it back down on a day with more
favourable conditions.
Weather:
Another beautiful fall day with lots of sunshine and some cloud cover early
that mostly burned away by noon. Temp was quite warm for the first day of
November hitting a high of 14C. Unfortunately, the winds were strong (with
near gale force gusts) from the SW. This definitely pushed whatever birds
were on the move today well inland.
Raptor Observations:
Thanks to the wind direction there wasn't much of a flight today with just
34 birds total. The species included TVs (12), Bald Eagle (1), N. Harrier
(2), Sharpies (6), Cooper's Hawks (5), Redtails (4), Golden Eagle (3) and
Merlin (1).
Non-raptor Observations:
Quite a few passerines were noted today including many flocks of Red-winged
blackbirds (with a few Grackles thrown in), many Am. Robins, E. Starlings,
Am. Goldfinch, Cedar Waxwings and Am. Pipits. A single Hermit Thrush was
spotted near the observers along with a couple of GC and RC kinglets and
what looked to be an Orange-crowned warbler, a few White-throated Sparrows,
a Fox Sparrow, Song Sparrow and a first of season Am. Tree Sparrow, a
couple of E. Bluebirds, BC Chickadees, N. Flicker, Downy and Pileated
Woodpecker...and many Blue Jays, Am. Crows, RB Gulls, Mourning Doves and
Rock Pigeons.
Predictions:
More of the same tomorrow so again any flight will be further inland away
from the lake shore. The whole week in fact has a forecast of SW or
southerly winds.
