Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintains records in a 50km radius of
MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders already using eBird are encouraged to
share their sightings with 'Kingston FN'. Alternatively, please email, phone
or post records directly to me - contact details below. Please note that
some sightings may require review and remain unconfirmed unless stated
otherwise.
Highlights:
Last weekend saw the annual Kingston area Fall Round-up take place and with
birders spread far and wide across the region, many good birds were noted.
Highlights of the week include SNOW GOOSE, CACKLING GOOSE, CANVASBACK, BLACK
SCOTER, RED-NECKED GREBE, GREAT CORMORANT, RED-THROATED LOON, OSPREY,
NORTHERN GOSHAWK, PEREGRINE FALCON, and EVENING GROSBEAK.
Kingston
Unfortunately, not too many birds have been reported from the city this week
though the Inner Harbour continues to hold a reasonable assortment of
waterfowl including a very respectable 342 AMERICAN COOT seen yesterday
(12th). Other birds included 11 PIED-BILLED GREBES and the regular
assortment of dabblers (NORTHERN PINTAIL, NORTHERN SHOVELER, AMERICAN WIGEON
and GADWALL) and divers (LESSER and GREATER SCAUP, REDHEAD, and BUFFLEHEAD).
At Cataraqui Bay, TUNDRA SWANS continue to be seen with 60 seen there on
11th. A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen at Princess Towers on 11th.
Wolfe Island
A single checklist from Button Bay on 10th produced 3 SNOW GEESE, 4 LAPLAND
LONGSPUR, AMERICAN PIPIT, SNOW BUNTING, HORNED LARK and TUNDRA SWAN - surely
a sign of winter!
Amherst Island
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen on the island on 8th, along with several
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS. Two SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen on 2nd Concession on 7th.
At Martin Edwards Reserve, PEREGRINE FALCON, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and a
late(ish) RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET were seen the same day. ASPARROW was also
seen on the island on 8th. Please note that you must be a member of Kingston
Field Naturalists (KFN) or be accompanied by a member to access the Martin
Edwards Reserve. Also note that the Owl Woods are closed for 3 weeks from
Mon 16th November to Monday 7th December inclusive.
Prince Edward Point
A RED-THROATED LOON was seen at the point on 8th, as were 4 BLACK SCOTERS.
PINE SISKINS, PURPLE FINCHES, SNOW BUNTINGS and CEDAR WAXWINGS were still
present in reasonable numbers on 7th/8th as well and a NORTHERN SHRIKE was
seen just outside the area on Babylon Road the same weekend. A SAVANAH
SPARROW was seen in the area on 8th.
Other sightings
The 4 CACKLING GEESE, photographed near Millhaven on 5th, were supplemented
by another 12 on 8th, making a total of 16 - probably one of, if not the
highest, totals in the Kingston area on record. An EVENING GROSBEAK was at
Hay Bay, also on 8th, as were 2 male CANVASBACKS. On 9th, a very good count
of 113 RUDDY DUCK was also made. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen near Verona on
11th.
Please note that Amherstview Sewage Lagoons remains closed and is now
unlikely to reopen before December.

purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the
traditional channels.
