While visiting the Hilda Road feeders at Shirley's Bay this afternoon a Merlin arrived and perched in a tall Spruce tree for nearly 10 minutes. It then swooped down and landed in a thicket as it tried to capture a Mourning Dove. The Merlin perched in the thicket for a minute before continuing its pursuit of the dove.
I then left the feeder area and circled around Shirley Boulevard where I found a Gray Catbird foraging along the edge of the road where the snowplow exposed some earth. The bird then flew up onto a low-lying branch and ate some snow before flying into the bushes. Directions to Hilda Road Feeders and Shirley Boulevard: Take Carling Avenue West and trun right (North) on to Rifle Road. Follow the road for about a kilometre and then turn right onto Lois Avenue. Lois joins with both roads. Good Birding.
