  The Buffalo Bird Report is a service provided by your
  Buffalo Museum of Science and the Buffalo Ornithological

  Highlights of reports received December 18 through
  January 7 from the Niagara Frontier Region.

  The second report of a BALTIMORE ORIOLE this winter,
  December 26, a male BALTIMORE ORIOLE at a feeder in Sunset
  Beach, on Lake Ontario in Orleans County. The oriole was
  attracted to orange peels served on a suet feeder. Also in
  Orleans County, January 4, a SAVANNAH SPARROW on Hall Road
  in Yates.

  In the Southern Tier, a GOLDEN EAGLE was photographed
  December 28, over the Allegany County Town of Wellsville.

  Waterfowl highlights - an adult ROSS'S GOOSE, first reported
  December 23 at the Modern Landfill Wetland on Balmer Road
  west of Ransomville Road in Niagara County. January 1, the
  same ROSS'S GOOSE at nearby Bond Lake Park, viewed from
  Lower Mountain Road in Lewiston. Also January 1, three
  CACKLING GEESE at the Modern Landfill Wetland. December 25
  on the Niagara River off Beaver Island State Park, a single
  juvenile BRANT among 320 TUNDRA SWANS. And, on the Buffalo
  Outer Harbor waterfront, December 26, a female KING EIDER at
  the Bell Slip.

  Recent reports from Niagara Falls - a JAEGER SPECIES at the
  brink of the falls. Three, to possibly five, different
  HARLEQUIN DUCKS off the Three Sisters Islands at Goat
  Island. The HARLEQUIN DUCKS favor a rock out in the rapids,
  marked with two small trees. Gulls roosting at the Three
  Sisters Islands included a THAYER'S GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, and
  numbers of ICELAND GULLS and L. BLACK-B. GULLS. On the lower
  river - another THAYER'S GULL at the Whirlpool and LITTLE
  GULL at Devil's Hole. And, at the river source in Buffalo,
  BLACK-HEADED GULL continues at the north end of Unity
  Island.

  SNOWY OWLS at several locations in the Lake Ontario Plains
  and the breakwalls of the Outer Harbor in Buffalo. NORTHERN
  SHRIKE, and small flocks of SNOW BUNTINGS and HORNED LARKS
  also in the Lake Ontario Plains. And NORTHERN SHRIKE all the
  way south to the Cattaraugus County Town of Hinsdale, in the
  Southern Tier.

  The only winter finch reported to date - a single PINE
  SISKIN, January 3, with a WHITE-THR. SPARROW, at a feeder in
  Hinsdale. In the Niagara County Town of Porter, on Lutts
  Road and Dietz Road, HERMIT THRUSH, RED-W. BLACKBIRD and
  numbers of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS and WHITE-THR. SPARROWS. And,
  an unexpected NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD in a yard on Delaware
  Road in Tonawanda.

  There will be a BOS on Wednesday, January 13, at 7 PM at the
  Buffalo Museum of Science. A program will be presented on a
  model to predict good birding days. Visitors are always
  welcome at BOS meetings.

  The Bird Report will be updated Thursday evening, January
  14. Please call in your sightings by noon Thursday. You may
  report sightings after the tone. Thank you for calling and
