A single cliff swallow nest can be found on the front porch of 40 Dungannon St.
in a fairly new subdivision in Markham. It has been nesting there at least
three years. The porch on this particular house is made of stone pillars (not
wooden ones), is fairly narrow, has a high ceiling, and is open on both sides.
Neighboring houses are wood and less "cave-like". Last weekend it was going in
and out about every 20 minutes.

I couldn't figure out why the birds would be interested in a new subdivision
but then discovered there is a large, well-vegetated storm-water retention pond
in the next block and they go hunting there.

As per bird etiquette rules, don't bother the owners or lurk.

Cheers,

Jennifer Minogue
