Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintains records in a 50km radius of MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their sightings with 'Kingston FN'. Alternatively, please email or post records directly to me - contact details below. Please note that some sightings may require review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise.
Highlights: Birding has been relatively slow in the Kingston area over the past few weeks with the only genuine rarity being a WORM-EATING WARBLER seen in the Owl Woods, Amherst Island on 4-5 July. However, there now seems to be a slight change in behaviour with birds once again becoming a little more vocal and visible now that fledging of many species has occurred. If out and about exploring the islands and back roads please remember to pull off the road safely in order to allow farm machinery full access to their fields. There have been several sightings of adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS recently with birds seen near Kingston airport, Frontenac Provincial Park, Desert Lake, and Gananoque Golf Course. LEAST BITTERNS continue to be reported, with individuals seen at Moscow Marsh, Sydenham, Wolfe Island and Beaver Meadows WMA, Prince Edward County. WILSON'S PHALAROPES are still being seen at Martin Edwards Reserve, Amherst Island where breeding success has been confirmed. Shorebirds have already been noted passing back through, with the first SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS seen on 8th July on Amherst Island. SEDGE WRENS have been seen (but mainly just heard) near Verona over the last month or so. However, the field they were mainly using has now been cut and, although still present, the birds are much harder to locate. SANDHILL CRANES have been seen near Murvale this week but they are fairly regularly seen at the private Hamilton Wetland, Prince Edward County. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy. Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be shared on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, thanks to all those who have submitted sightings over the last couple of weeks. Mark. Mark D.
