Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintains records in a 50km radius of MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their sightings with 'Kingston FN'. Highlights: The birding this past week has remained mainly unchanged with very few birds of note. A minor increase in shorebird numbers and diversity would indicate the beginning of return passage. Continuing on from last week, we have again had sightings of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS in the area, with 2 adults seen at a private residence near Gananoque for the last couple of days. A LEAST BITTERN was seen near Odessa on 28th - this species is likely under-recorded in the area. An interesting record of 3 RED CROSSBILLS came in from a location near Verona on 30th. Whether these were resident birds or very early migrants is unclear. Not seen/recorded for some time, the ORCHARD ORIOLES of Lemoine Point CA, Kingston were on show on 26th. Kingston's resident PEREGRINE FALCON was seen on 30th. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy. Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be shared on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, thanks to all those who have submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
