The big news of the week is a SNOWY EGRET which has been present in Windermere Basin for most of the week. Sometimes, it stays hidden behind the islands on the east side. At other times its out in the shallows on the west side. Park in the lot off Eastport Drive and walk to the lookout. The bird was present today, patience is necessary. Other birds to look at while there include Great Blue Heron, a good number of Black-crowned Night Herons seen a couple of days ago, Semipalmated Plover, Spotted Sandpiper, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Semipalmated, Least Sandpiper, a lovely adult Baird's Sandpiper, an adult Stilt Sandpiper and Short-billed Dowitchers. Occasionally while surfing the terns, a Bonaparte's Gull sneaks into the crowd. Another good spot to go for shorebirds is Grimsby Sewage Lagoons which is on Winston Road just east of the DND Firing Range, east of Fifty Point Conservation Area. The same mix is there at the Windermere Basin but additions are Great Egrets, Solitary and Pectoral Sandpiper. Park on the shoulder, there is a small fence to get over to view the lagoons. Be wary of ticks. A few passerine migrants have been reported this week. Tied for an early record today was a Canada Warbler at Grimsby Sewage Lagoons along with a Least Flycatcher. Many Yellow Warblers are moving through as well. At Joe Sams Park in Waterdown, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Ovenbird and Northern Waterthrush were migrants of note. That's the news this week. Please send in your sightings. Northeast winds the next few days should bring some migrants in.
