Later on the afternoon we had a couple nice chats about the Hawk Festival (starting the 10th!) with some people down for a photography course in Windsor. Weather: The morning started out crappy with the first 2.5 hours of counting being in solid fog. The wind started out in the North and slowly switched to the South throughout the morning. Raptor Observations: Don't Forget! Our annual Hawk Festival starts Tomorrow! Come visit us at the festival, September 10, 11, 17, 18! With the fog, no raptors were observed in the first 3 hours of counting, but after that there was a fairly steady movement through most of the day, although it was very high most of the time and usually barely visible with bare eyes. Non-raptor Observations: The first 3 hours of the count with the fog and shortly after were surprisingly excellent for non-raptor migration! Non-stop through the morning bird were doing their nocturnal flight calls while migrating overhead, and some of the warblers even came down into the shrubs under the tower; 13 warbler species were identified, 51 individuals remained unidentified. For the full eBird checklist of all non-migrant-raptors today, go to http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S31499561 It was hard to keep track of dragonfly numbers today, but at least 55 Black Saddlebags, 25 Green Darners, and 3 Twelve-spotted Skimmers were observed migrating. 9 Monarch butterflies were noted migrating as well. Predictions: Unfortunately they are calling for some rain tomorrow for the morning and part of the afternoon. The winds to be out of the SW for most of the day. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Sean Jenniskens ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
