Visitors:
Lot of people to watch the hawks today! A birder couple from Texas was on
the tower from morning until early afternoon, and have been birding in the
area for about a week now.
Weather:
Weather was great for Hawks today! Moderately strong N winds in the am,
switching to NE in the afternoon. And there were always some clouds
overhead for spotting them!
Raptor Observations:
Surprisingly, the first hour of the day had no raptors recorded! Today was
the first big push of Broad-winged Hawks, though they didn't show up until
about 2pm. We had fairly low numbers for the day, and then suddenly there
were 1650 in the sky above us! But the real highlight of the day didn't
come till evening. At 5:24pm, a Swainson's Hawk was observed streaming with
a group of Broad-winged Hawks!
Non-raptor Observations:
There wasn't a lot of time to focus on the non-raptors today unfortunately.
Although there were several hundred dabbling ducks in the air at one point,
and some variety of duck observed before then. For the eBird checklist, go
to http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S31584199 11 Black Saddlebags, 3
Green Darners, and 12 Monarchs were noted.
Predictions:
NE winds again tomorrow! Should be good for migration, although clear skies
won't be helping us any!
