Visitors:
A pile of visitors today (40+) who were treated to a great hawkwatch day.
Thanks to everyone on the crew who helped with today's count especially
given how busy they were tallying all those Broadwings! :)
Weather:
Well with winds from the NW and N light to moderate as forecast it figured
to be a good flight day and it was! The cloud cover was 90 to 100% making
spotting and counting the birds easier. Humidity dropped over the morning
and temps were lower to a comfortable 22C for a high.
Raptor Observations:
Today's flight proves just how important the weather can be as the winds
pushed the birds down to the lake shore and into the hawkwatch area.
The total was 4,259 raptors over the 9 hour count period...and the
Broadwings proved they are definitely on the move with 3,759 tallied. This
should be just a precurser of the main push of BWs over the next week or
so. Unfortunately, winds are predicted to be mostly southerly over that
time frame so the bulk of that flight could end up well inland.
There were just a few each of Osprey (3), Bald Eagle (4), Cooper's Hawks
(3) and Merlin (5). A decent flight of N. Harrier (23) and good numbers of
Sharpies (293) and A. Kestrels (169).
Non-raptor Observations:
In the other category today are some great warblers (Black and White,
Blackpoll, Chestnut-sided, Tennessee, Redstart, Nashville, Cape May,
Bay-breasted, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Magnolia,
Ovenbird, Palm and Common Yellowthroat), House Wren, Gray Catbird, Red-eyed
Vireo, RT Hummingbirds, Wood Thrush, Common Loon, Song Sparrow and
Red-bellied Woodpecker.
Monarchs were moving again today as well with 74 tallied.
Predictions:
If the forecast holds winds will be moderate to light from the NE and then
backing in the afternoon to E with lots of sunshine. Should make for
another decent flight.
