It was a pretty good day at the beach starting this morning at 8 a.m. with sightings of Sabine's Gull and Parasitic Jaeger. Shortly after a record early Brant was seen along the shore and a Red-necked Phalarope. Throughout the day, there were quite a few sightings of Parasitic Jaeger, some close, most far. I arrived around 4:30 p.m. and around 5 p.m. we had the adult Long-tailed Jaeger and Parasitic Jaeger fly over the viewing platform and another juvenile Parasitic come in almost as close as the wave tower. After I left at 6p.m. there was apparently another adult Long-tailed Jaeger and several sightings of Parasitic.
Just wanted to give Ontbirders a view of the day from reports I had received. Tomorrow is forecast for east winds to 10 kph in the morning and 15 kph in the afternoon with gusts to 27. These are good conditions for lakewatching. Nothing is guaranteed and I am not personally responsible for what you see or don't see but some have asked me to give a heads up if the conditions are ripe. Scopes are extremely helpful for this activity. The winds at the lift bridge can be found at http://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/on-95_metric_e.html. East and northeast are best. With the approaching weather on the weekend, it could be a good day at the beach tomorrow. For those who are there tomorrow, please post your sightings to the list serve so that others who are thinking about travel from a distance know whether its worth it.
