Highlights: The weather has remained much milder than expected, with little or no winds. Just a quick summary this week of some of the highlights including: CACKLING GOOSE, KING EIDER, RED-THROATED LOON, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD. Kingston A RED-THROATED LOON was seen just outside Cataraqui Bay on 15th, and RUDDY DUCKS continue in the Inner Harbour just south of Belle Island with 10 seen there on 16th and 20 on 17th. A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was present at Hillview Pond 12th-14th. Wolfe Island IBA A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD continues to be seen regularly on Button Bay Road, where HORNED LARKS and SNOW BUNTINGS are also being reported more frequently. Three LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen there on 15th. Amherst Island IBA It's really a case of negative news from the island with raptors being scarce to absent, though a NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen there on 17th. A respectable tally of 78 HORNED GREBES was also noted the same day, as were singles of BLACK SCOTER and NORTHERN SHRIKE, both at Martin Edwards Reserve. Please note that you must be a member of Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) or be accompanied by a member to access the Martin Edwards Reserve. Also note that the Owl Woods are closed for 3 weeks from Monday 21st November to Sunday 11th December inclusive. Other Sightings The female KING EIDER continues to entertain visitors at the Millhaven ferry dock (to Amherst Island) where it has present since 5th. Staying close to shore, this bird has been easy to see. Just down the road opposite the old CIL factory, 4 CACKLING GEESE remain - these birds present since 6th at least. Just north of here at Napanee Plains IBA, a NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on 16th. Elsewhere, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen at Adolphustown on 13th and 2 COMMON REDPOLLS were flyovers near Crosby on 14th. A FIELD SPARROW was seen on the north shore of Loughborough lake on 15th. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy. Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be shared on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, thanks to all those who have submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
