Hi everyone, Saturday February 11th was the fourth (of six) West End of Lake Ontario IBA waterbird survey. These are surveys are done to monitor population trends of 'trigger species' in peak times of the year. There were around 35 volunteers who submitted over 50 checklists in 17 sections of the lake! Volunteers counted a total of 52 species, and 33,448 individual birds! Of note were the 13,791 Long-tailed Ducks, and 5,820 Greater Scaup throughout the IBA, a Harlequin Duck at Lorne Park in Mississauga, a King Eider at Jones Road in Stoney Creek, and an Iceland Gull at the Port Weller east pier.

If you have any questions about the IBAs or surveys, you can email the Ontario IBA Coordinator at [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>. Thanks to the amazing volunteers that brave the cold every month to count the IBA!
