Highlights: It was a very quiet week for birds. Cold temperatures finally froze the lake in our local area forcing waterfowl to move elsewhere but even the heavy snowfall we received didn't really push birds to feeders or roadsides. Here are the highlights of the last week: WOOD DUCK - The male was only seen once this week (on 12th) at Napanee Springside Park, Napanee. This is most likely due to lack of observers rather than the bird moving on. NORTHERN GOSHAWK - An immature was seen again west of Kingston (near Westbrook) on 15th. RED-SHOULDERED HAWK - the continuing adult bird has been seen on 11th and 17th this week along the 401, just west of Napanee. PEREGRINE FALCON - there was just 1 sighting of Kingston's resident bird this week, on 17th. TUFTED TITMOUSE - The single bird at Gananoque was only seen a couple of times this week, on 11th and 16th. EASTERN BLUEBIRD - Just one record this week of 2 birds just NW of Napanee on 11th. NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD - A continuing bird was seen in the west end of Kingston on 5 different dates this week, 11th and 13th-16th. BOHEMIAN WAXWING - just a few sightings this week with the largest flocks at Napanee Plain IBA on 11th (42) and near Lansdowne on 14th (37). LAPLAND LONGSPUR - this is not an easy bird to track down this year. 1 was seen on 9th Line, Wolfe Island on 16th. SAVANNAH SPARROW - after last week's first bird of the season (on Amherst Island), we had another report this week of 2 on Wolfe Island on 14th. SWAMP SPARROW - a single bird was seen west of Marysville on 14th. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings Policy <http://kingstonfieldnaturalists.org/birding/KFN_sensitive_sightings_policy. pdf> . Also note that, as requested by the landowners, sightings of owls at the privately-owned Owl Woods must not be shared on the Internet (this includes posting as 'Amherst Island' on eBird) by KFN or anyone who visits. To ensure continued access to this location, please respect their wishes and follow the guidelines posted on-site. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings from that location are welcomed through all the traditional channels. As always, a big thank you goes to all who have submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
