They managed to see several Sharp-shinned Hawks as well as Am. Kestrels. There were amazed to find out that I had already seen over 600 hawks today before they arrived. Weather: Very light South and Southeasterly winds throughout the day today. Not much in the way of clouds, but there were a few keeping the raptors spotting a bit easier. It was fairly hazy however, making counting distant birds difficult. Raptor Observations: A much better day than the previous few, with 871 raptors counted. A few small kettles of 100-250 Broad-winged Hawks were observed far to the north, just fading in and out of view in the haze. It was also a decent day for Sharpies (167) and Am. Kestrels (82) which would frequently be migrating over in groups of 3-5. Biggest surprise of the day was yet another adult Red-shouldered Hawk, which makes 3 in the past 4 days. This seems very early for these birds. Non-raptor Observations: Approximately 245 Am. Coots were counted out in the marsh. One Black-bellied Plover was heard migrating over, as well as 2 Am. Golden-Plovers which were seen and heard as well. There were 4 Red-headed Woodpeckers observed migrating (all immatures) as well as 9 Northern Flickers. Today was much slower than yesterday passerine-wise, though it wasn't pouring rain today so I'm not complaining!! For the full list; of non-raptors observed today, see the eBird checklist here http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S39303805 There were 65 Monarchs counted migrating today, as well as about 120 Dragonflies; many went unidentified but I noted many to be Black Saddlebags and Twelve-spotted Skimmers. Predictions: Tomorrow is predicted to be fairly similar to today, with slightly stronger winds. Hoping for another good day but it's hard to say! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Sean Jenniskens (seanjennisk...@hotmail.com) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
