In addition, Alfred Raab of the Bruce Peninsula was up on the tower for a few hours as well. Weather: Today was yet another scorcher on the tower, with a humidex of about 37 degrees Celsius (about 98 degrees Fahrenheit). Unlike yesterday, the sky was beautiful for hawkcounting today, with lots of white patches against the blue sky! Light winds all day, but the first hour in the morning they were out of the north. They then switched to east and eventually southeasterly. Raptor Observations: Despite the un-ideal winds for the majority of the day, it was a fairly decent flight. We are still getting a few kettles of Broad-wings way out to the north, though I feel that the main flight missed us. Today was a fairly good day for Sharpies, with 240 being tallied. The big excitement of the day was getting our first adult male Northern Harrier for the year! It seems relatively early as the adult males usually don't show up in numbers until we near the end of the season. Non-raptor Observations: There were 2630 Blue Jays counted today, which is the highest count so far this season. Here is the link to the full days eBird checklist: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S39395385 There were 38 Monarch butterflies counted migrating today. Predictions: Southwesterly winds predicted for tomorrow. It should be another very toasty day! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Sean Jenniskens ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
