Visitors:
Thanks to everyone who helped with today's count... Bob, Matt, Tom B,
Chris, Mac, Steve, Keith, Cary, Ernie, John F, Tom S along with visitors
Tom and Cini Ovington along with Ken and Eleanor Ovington. (hopefully got
all the names included and spelled right.)
Weather:
A MUCH better day weather wise with moderate NW and NNW winds and a temp
that started at 11C to a high of 17C. Lots of cloud cover around making it
much easier to spot the birds.
Raptor Observations:
A great hawk watching day today with a total of 1,291 birds of 11 different
species. Finally got a decent push of Broadwings (772) with several nice
kettles though many passed through at quite the height.
A fantastic day for Bald Eagles (52) that were tallied as migrants since
they were spotted throughout the day crossing high over the hawk watch area
headed westward. Also an excellent flight of Peregrines (11) though not
totally a surprise given we're coming up on their prime time migration time
frame.
Other species seen included a single Osprey, N. Harriers (14), Sharpies
(179), Cooper's Hawks (4), Redtails (2), Am. Kestrels (129) and Merlins
(4).
Non-raptor Observations:
Some non-raptors reported today... including N. Flicker, DC Cormorant,
Red-bellied Woodpecker, Common Loons, Canada Geese, YB Sapsucker, GC and RC
Kinglets, BC Chickadees, Downy Woodpecker, Brown-headed Cowbirds, N.
Cardinals, Am. Robins, Am. Crows, Caspian Tern, Pileated Woodpecker, Common
Grackle, Nashville Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Hairy Woodpecker, WB
Nuthatch, WT Sparrow, Eastern Phoebe, Winter Wren, Northern Parula and
Cedar Waxwings. Blue Jays tallied 2,100.
Monarchs for the day: 68
Predictions:
The winds MAY prove interesting for more Peregrines IF they stay mostly
SW... but they look like they might get to WSW which would stall pretty
much any kind of decent flight overall. However, keep and eye on the
forecast for Saturday as winds are predicted to go NW overnight Friday and
well into the day Saturday which should bring some good birds. Fingers
crossed!!
