A big thank you to Bob for bringing us the gorgeous Roughie! Weather: Strong south and southwest winds throughout the day, with a sky filled with clouds of varying heights and patterns. In the last 2 hours of the count, I could seen dark rain clouds drifting north of us to our west. Raptor Observations: It was a better than expected day for raptor migrting when considering the weather. A total of 1634 raptors were counted, majority of which were Turkey Vultures, which seemed relatively steady all day. A good flight of Merlins with 8 being counted, as well as 2 Peregrines. Bob Hall-Brooks brought a beautiful immature light morph Rough-legged Hawk up the tower for us to see! It was a gorgeous bird, and was counted about 45min after it was released! Non-raptor Observations: A single "Blue" Snow Goose was observed flying due south out over the lake, and our second Common Loon of the season was observed flying east in the late afternoon. 730 Blue Jays, and 675 American Crows were counted migrating. Additionally, 220 Horned Larks, 77 American Robins, and 246 Cedar Waxwings were counted migrating past, along with our first 4 Lapland Longspurs of the year. Full eBird checklist at: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S40160055?share=true Two more Monarchs were counted today. Predictions: More strong southwest winds; the morning is looking like rain but it should clear up before noon. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Sean Jenniskens ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
