Greetings Ontbirders
Presqu’ile Report for the week of July 5th to 11th 2019
Due to a lack of reports this will be a very short report!

A NORTHERN SHOVELER was spotted flying down the beach on July 9th. VIRGINIA
RAILS were heard calling July 10th from the Constructed Wetland as were
numerous COMMON GALLINULES.
The only shorebirds reported this week were SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and KILLDEER
from beach2. The beach is still flooded with little habitat but as the beach
dries up it should be in very good shape to welcome southbound migrants in the
very near future!
A flock of 9 BONAPARTE’S GULLS were seen from beach 2 as well as a couple of
birds seen from Salt Point later in the week.
A BARRED OWL was spotted by a trio of birders in Newcastle Woods. This bird was
being harassed by a group of very noisy WOOD THRUSHES!
A pair of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS are visiting at least a couple of residential
feeders all week. As of yet no young birds have been located. A MERLIN was
heard and then seen flying past Paxton.
GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS could still be heard singing in the Park. Best bet to
find them is to cover the conifer plantations in the Park.
SCARLET TANAGER a very rare breeder in the Park was reported on July 6th.

Directions: Presqu’ile Provincial Park is located on the north shore of Lake
Ontario, just south of the town of Brighton. It can be reached from either
Hwy. 401, or Cty. Rd. 2 and is well signed. A Park map can be found in the
information tabloid available at the Park gate. Presqu’ile’s two offshore
islands – Gull and High Bluff – support a large multi-species colonial bird
nesting area and access is not permitted during the breeding season (10
March-10 September).
