Thanks to John Barnes, Fran and Brian from Kingsville and Daniel Huang and Emma Rien from Toronto and all the others for visiting the tower and taking an interest. Weather: A cold and windy day on the tower, with the temperature as low as 6 degC and the wind gusting up to about 25km/h. The wind was generally from the SW, making it hard for Raptors to move west. Raptor Observations: The day started slowly, but from mid morning there was a steady flow of Turkey Vultures with over 1600 by the end of the day. We saw a good movement of Bald Eagles finishing with 10 for the day. Other numbers were low, especially Buteos, probably reluctant to fly far in a significant headwind. Non-raptor Observations: Better numbers of ducks on the marsh today, especially Gadwall (164). Boneparte's Gulls (146) continued to come into the marsh and it was great to see a good number of Chimney Swifts (154) migrating out of the cold weather. Sadly not many songbirds today, probably suppressed by the wind. Ebird list at https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S60565593 Predictions: Forecast is for a warmer day with slightly lower wind speed, but still from the SW. Hopefully we will continue to see more numbers of Turkey Vultures and the Buteos may be more likely to fly. However with winds continuing in the SW large numbers may be unlikely. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Hugh Kent ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
