ok, i guess i should jump in here. I thought you were all smart enough
that we didn't need a list-mom, but here we go.. a couple quick points:
1) This list is entirely made up of people that sach and i know to be
smart, so could we please drop the whole i don't know you and you said 'X'
so you must be dumb argument? Unless it's said by sach or myself, don't
consider it a sign of lack of intelligence.
2) a _lot_ of the people on the list have incredibly caustic senses of
humor, so be prepared
My guidelines for happy funtime
On Sarcasm:
I know you all have highly developed senses of sarcasm, so please try to
use them when _reading_ as well as writing. If someone says somthing that
sounds totally obnoxious, try to think about what you might have meant if
you had said it.
On flame-wars:
I really have no problem with personal attacks, caustic remarks, or general
rude tones in email as long as they are in fun. If you want to attack
someone's opinion, please at least make it interesting reading for the rest
of us or take it off the list.
On email-trimming
Another thing that i don't have a strongly held opinion on. As a
responsible member of the internet, i try to be concious of what other
people will think of my emails, so i tend to trim any long posts to keep
the emails small. On the other hand if each email thread is only 1-2 lines
long, i usually will reply the whole bit, to keep continuity. In reality,
i think erik is the only one that is of the opinion that you shouldn't trim
big posts, and that's probably mostly due to the fact that he's lazy, and
now has to save face in under the assault of brandon's rather brutal post.
A very useful tool for following a thread is the mail archive at
www.mail-archive.com type in 'bits'
On posting in general
If you don't think a majority of the people on the list will find it worth
taking time out of their days to read, don't post it. (all you unemployed
jokers have a big advantage there)
This list started as a sort of help! forum for system administrators. It
has since grown to be a general list of technically-oriented people who are
friends of me, sach or erik. The only way you got here was because we
thought you would be interested in what everyone else has to say. Try to
keep your emails in one of 2 categories: informative or interesting.
So to summarize:
Ook ook language == appropriate
how do i turn an ldap server into a keyserver? == appropriate
brandon's post == borderline... I mean it's rude, but i figured most of you
would have taken into account that i wouldn't have let him on the list if
he was as big a dick as he sounds
Fuck YOU <eom> == possibly appropriate for the side of a brick, but a
pretty weak as a non-interactive comeback.
If you have trouble distinguishing between interesting/not interesting, ask
jay, he wrote the guide.
thx for your time, the management
