rotate your log files. if they are not being rotated, they are probably
rather large at this point. also, is this machine a mailserver? my earlier
query about it being redhat (which i see it is by reading further) is
because redhat does some really (imho) silly things with their default
partitions. i'm of the opinion that / /var /usr and /home should all be
seperate partitions. redhat doesn't do it that way, and as a result, i see
a lot of redhat boxes get into a state where the root partition is
crowded. also, a lot of useless rpm data is stored in /var. as for the
phantom space, dunno off the top of my head. i'd have to take a look.

brandon probably has a better idea of what to look for in regards to that.

i believe kcore represents physical ram, but i'd have to go look.
