John would never have had this problem because he is running
Linux ext2, which has a 2 gb file size limitation. His rogue
httpd process would be able to write that size *and that's it*.
Further: if you are admin on a machine and you start having
disk size issues and don't notice something filling up a
fifty gig disk, you're a sucky admin. You should run an
hourly "health check" that freaks out if certain things are
not within acceptable parameters. Like, figure out how much
space you want to be warned at and have the script send you
mail if you drop below that.
I'm certain there is some linux-centric OpenSource thing out
there someplace that can do this job for you. Christian or
Eric or Jay may have an idea for one.
