        Sharity-Light is a userland samba system that may solve
        your problems (unless I'm misunderstanding them).  I use
        it with NetBSD, because NetBSD doesn't have kernel support
        for SMB shares.

        So, as user bharris, i can:

                shlight //server/share location

        You can throw -U options at it, too.
