Yes, it makes sense. I've been doing a little research on the side
and came across this yesterday.

So let's see. The machine I am sitting at which will display the X
apps is called the remote client. The machine I'm ssh-ing into which
launches the apps is called the local server. Right?

So X needs to be running on the remote client but not the local
server. Do I need xserver-xfree86 installed on the server?
(apparently not as I just apt-get removed it an I can still launch X
apps). I am setting up a minimal debian server (core OS 100MB) so
want to get rid of anything nonessential, but I do want to be able to
run X apps from the server.

What exactly happens when I launch an X app on a server with the
DISPLAY variable set to a remote client? Is some other program
launched? Is there some daemon involved? Is the X11 library code
which the apps link to that does the dirty work? I'm putting my money
on the latter.

In a nutshell, what is the bare minimum of X that I need on the
server to serve apps?

Thanks,
John
