You just need the client software. Let's use mozilla as a reference. You want to run mozilla off the "local" machine. Your remote laptop must be running the X server software. The local server just needs mozilla. You ssh into the local server (that sets your DISPLAY for you if you have X11 forwarding on) and run mozilla. It appears on your remote machine.
