We worked with DB2 on AIX for macys and DB2 on Solaris for chrysler. It
was just ok. DB2 runs well on AIX and running in on Solaris just seems
like a crime against the Solaris gods. But it works...

I remember a couple of things about it:
1.) it was different enough from oracle (all we had was oracle dbas) that
we felt we needed to hire a db2 person.

2.) when you look for a DB2 dba you usually get mainframe guys that reply.
DB2 was originally for their MVS systesm. These guys typically don't know
what tcp/ip is and the mainframe version of DB2 is a completely different
beast than the UNIX version.

3.) DB2 on unix is not that widely deployed so finding people with
experience (on unix) was hard. We ended up training our oracle dbas and
were able to fake it enough to get by.

I would vote against running linux, maybe consider running AIX, but go
with Solaris. The bitch about IBM is that their hardware isn't cheap.
If you are used to Solaris you'll have to get used to AIX. IBM claims to
be really into linux but when it comes down to it, for big apps like DB2,
they aren't.

I think if you ran solaris 9 (perferably 10) on something like a 480 (4cpu
UltraSparc III) you'd be ok.
