Things aren’t looking to good for Natalie Cole as the desperate search
for a new kidney continues:

Ailing singer Natalie Cole is still in need of a new kidney, after her
son was rejected as a possible donor. Cole, 59, has been battling ill
health since she was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in 2008. She suffered
kidney problems while she undergoing treatment for the liver disease,
and is currently undergoing dialysis three times a week.

The only cure is a kidney transplant - and her 31-year-old son, Robert,
was checked out as a possible donor. But Cole revealed on Tuesday
(31Mar09) night’s Larry King Live show that her son has been ruled out
- after doctors discovered he isn’t a suitable candidate for organ
donation
She tells King, “It’s more than blood. It’s not just if you’re B
negative. And I’m B positive. Your general health has to be really,
really good. There are some other requirements that they have.
“In other words, my son had some blood pressure issues. And they felt
that that was a red flag. To a regular doctor who you see, let’s say,
once every couple of months, that’s not a big deal, if your pressure is
at, say, 135/80. But to the transplant people, that’s a big deal.”

But Cole’s hope of receiving an organ transplant may still come to
fruition, TV host King presented her with a pile of emails from
viewers, offering the star their own kidneys. And the singer was
overwhelmed by the response, telling King, “I always felt that it was
just so strange to solicit to strangers for a kidney. But people are
really great. There are some great human beings out there. That’s all I
can say.”

Classic crooner Smokey Robinson is also concerned about Natalie’s well
being:

Natalie Cole received a shock call on U.S. TV on Tuesday (31Mar09)
night, when legendary singer Smokey Robinson phoned the Larry King show
to offer his support to the star.
Cole was on the talk show detailing her fight against the Hepatitis C
virus when the host announced he had a surprise caller on the line.

And the singer couldn’t hide her happiness at Robinson’s uplifting
message. Robinson said, “Natalie’s my baby. I wanted to call in and
tell you that Francis and I are praying for you. Everything’s going to
be all right. Everything’s really going to be all right. I heard that
you were going to be on the show today. I said, let me call in and tell
my baby is everything is going to be fine.”

When asked by King how he thought Cole had handled her health problems,
Robinson declared, “Natalie’s a trooper. Natalie’s a trooper in every
aspect of life. I mean, so she’s just a trooper. And she handles
everything. So I know she is going to handle this perfectly, because
that’s who she is. She’s always been that way.”

This sounds quite dire. We hope she pulls through. SMH.
