Slit is a docking place for dockable applications.
The easiest way of learning is trying:
# nohup bbrun &
# nohup bbpager -w &
# nohup bbkeys -m -t -w &
# nohup gkrellm -w &

They will be docked into the slit now.
If you tried this example, it's the time to read the documentation ;-)
