I've used KDE since it first appeared until this week. I changed to blackbox because I wanted a less heavy, more responsive desktop. I had a problem getting it started, but once I got it (>startx blackbox) it has worked flawlessly. I don't really miss KDE, well I did use KMail and liked it a lot, but PINE works fine, too.
I've seen your posts and cannot figure out why blackbox is dying. Could this be caused by some app you use? Under KDE if I kept abiword up for over 36 hours it caused all of the windowing decorations on all of the windows and the desktop of KDE itself to simply disappear. Killing X and restarting resolved the issue, but it does show that an app can cause a problem across supposed "boundaries". (I have not had this problem with blackbox, BTW.) Blackbox seems to be more stable than KDE in my working environment, which I admit is fairly simple- emacs, pine, lynx, abiword. I do miss a spreadsheet (KSpread was what I was using), but my wife is giving me a login on one of her NT boxes so I can move the one spreadsheet I have to Excel. I'd suggest starting simple with blackbox and adding one app at a time until the desired (er, undesired) result appeared, then backtracking from there.
