I start X with something like xterm or bbpal holding the X session. Then
from the console (not within X) I start blackbox inside gdb. Then I go to
the X session and start working. If anything bad happens I do not lose my
windows.

It is important to have gdb on a console, because if the wm crashes and gdb is
in X you can not access to find out why.

I have used X nest in the past, but I tend to use the above method more.
