I've compiled KDE in it's entirety several times, without many problems.
Say what you like, it's not -- out of the box -- broken.  (As much as I
despise it...)

If they would just take out the entire useless debugging gunk (which
gets discarded to /dev/null under KDE *anyway*!), things might be a bit
faster.  They spend so much time doing I/O...  Have you tried running a
KDE app outside of KDE?  Watch the output scroll by.
