Now I can't anymore either. It crashed right when I was testing various
fonts and I thought that was the reason.

It works fine with just Verdana.

I've discovered something interesting. You only get font anti-aliasing if
you use a fontconfig handle for the *font style resources. If you use an X
format (ie. -*-arial-medium-r-*-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1) it works, but you
don't get aa. I'm guessing the alternative identifications mean using
either fontconfig _or_ X for font display, and only fontconfig has aa.
