If you choose "Default session" from the GDM sessions menu, .xsession
should be executed. See the comments in /etc/gdm/Xsession. In this case
you can put blackbox at the end of .xsession so that it gets started as
well.

That's the advice commonly given in newsgroups etc. and it works so I
wrote this in the wiki. As I figured out now, a .gtkrc-2.0 as written
by switch2 suffices for GTK themes and fonts.

All the other things you can configure in the Gnome control center, menu
and toolbar style and so on, require gnome-settings-daemon to be
actually applied and maintained (i.e. not stored). So starting it is
convenient, at least when you use Gnome compilant apps and care about
some settings besides the GTK theme. (gnome-theme-manager starts it
along with itsef.)

Note: Some Linux distributions put gnome-settings-daemon in /usr/lib
instead of /usr/bin so it may not be in your $PATH. In this case you'll
have to provide the correct path in .xsession - if you plan to use it.

Regards, Thomas
