#1 sounds to me like a path discrepancy between user and
root.  In each case, try "which blackbox" and see if you
don't get two different paths for the binaries.  If you have
two different versions installed in two different places,
remove the unwanted version.  You might need to make sure
your $PATH is set properly as both root and user as well.
