The problem is that both gimp and netscape want full control
over the 256 colors in the palette, but only one can have them
at a time. So when gimp is in focus, it gets to control what
the 256 colors are; since changing the palette also changes
the colors that netscape was using, netscape is no longer using
the correct colors, and looks all funky.

You should have similar problems with most other graphically
intensive apps -- image viewers, etc.

Just to be sure this is the problem, though, you could try
running another window manager and see if you get the same
problem. If you don't, let me know.
