Different video cards, X servers, available memory and possibly
display depths. Was the memory size you reported the SIZE or the
RSS? I wouldn't worry to much about SIZEs. The local X server on
my new box reports 55M SIZE, but only 5-6M RSS.

Basically, I suspect the different servers/cards are using different
optimizations to speed performance (if you run X manually, take a
look at the info the X server spits out on startup), which involves
grabbing some extra memory which may or may not actually get used.
