A good mailing list program will allow the option to put a reply-to the
mailing list if and only if the sender didn't have a reply-to address. If the
sender did use a reply-to, then that is to be respected, unless it's identical
to the From header.

Then you use a proper mail agent. The main problem with the "Reply-To
Considered Harmful" document is that the author considered the behaviour of
elm as the only possible right behaviour. I use mutt most of the time (except
here at work where I don't for reasons too complicated to go into). In mutt,
if you go to reply to a message with a Reply-To header, it will say "Reply to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]? (y/n) [y]", and if you say "n", it will offer to
reply to the From address instead. Of course mutt also gives you the "L" to
reply to a list (after you tell it the addresses of lists) so you can handle
non-reply-munging mailing lists too.

Don't assume that all mailing lists are run by majordomo, and don't assume
that your broken mailer always does the right thing. That's the same mistake
the author of the document in question made. Just because things are broken
in your world doesn't mean that you can't come into the present.
