Most likely you have one of two problems. Either your frame buffer is set to
8 and therefore the server is running in it as well or you are running 8+24
and running your xserver in 8 (this is typically the default).
You can check your frame buffer by first determining what it is (ls -la
/dev/fb0 and see what it is linked to) probably ffb or m64. You can then use
the config for that to change the color depth on the frame buffer (ffbconfig
or m64config). You should then edit your /etc/dt/config/Xservers file or or
.xserverrc (which ever you are using) and add the switch -defdepth 24 to it.
Once everything is running in 24 bit things should look great.
