Picking up on some recent comments: I prefer light text on a dark background *if* the values are really light and dark and the colors contrast well. Jan Schaumann's "wheat" foregroung is good on something like "darkslategrey." I use it myself. But, of course, the user's browser is going to interpret color to suit itself.
With a light background, I'd prefer a very light grey or greyish blue, etc, rather than white. White tends to glare more. And old age--that camel has its head, neck, and forequarters in my tent right now. My vision correction is good and I have a good monitor, but I don't waste time trying to read marginally legible sites. And a friend is color-blind, so a red-green scheme would be difficult for him without a good range of value. Finally, a committee can't design a website, nor, I suspect, can the subscribers to amailing list. I trust Rajat and the other folks to do a good job.
