So, spent a while last night working with bsetroot. Setting the required X Atom is only half of the problem -- the pixmap must still be there when Eterm (or whomever) requests it. Well, I can make this work for the -mod option. the -solid option never actually creates a pixmap so there is nothing for the term to use. The -gradient has its pixmap deleting when the image control class's destructor is called so once again there is no pixmap for use.
Summary -- sorry no pseudo transparency under Eterm with bsetroot.
