The difference is that "M$" contains a judgement.  "Un*x" or it's
variants are neutral.  It's intended to summarize the various flavors of
UNIX-like operating systems with one word.

I agree that "M$", "Micro$loth" and all the other variations are not
suitable for a projects website.
