Well it seems "reply to author" doesn't post to the public board so
for everyone's future benefit . . .
I find the easiest way to address this by setting up a keyboard
shortcut to through the keyboard preferences pane to select the next
input method editor (IME). I set mine to cmd-space and change my
default Spotlight shortcut to cmd-shift-space (I hardly open the full
Spotlight window and when I need to I usually go through a Finder
window, but I guess this has changed on Leopard).

With this setup you can bring up QS then hit cmd-space to switch to
English then type your command. This is troublesome however with more
than two IMEs because you end up having to cycle back and forth rather
than toggle. If you want, you can set up another shortcut that selects
the previous IME instead of the next one.

A better way might be to get the wonderful QIM Chinese IME <http://
glider.ismac.cn/RegQIME.html> It is far superior to Apple's default
Chinese IME and it also allows you to switch between Chinese and
Roman (English) input with the mere press of Caps Lock.
