It is very strange that you would get this compressed file behaviour. Did you try downloading another copy of β53? Also, it may be that there were some strange permissions at work with your file. Open the Get Info window on both a freshly re-downloaded copy of β53 and on the folder you have it stored in (typically Downloads) and make sure you have read and write permissions on both the folder and the file. (To open the Get Info window, right click on the file or folder in Finder, and choose Get Info from the contextual menu.)
