See it's always a good idea to describe exactly what you're doing and
how it's behaving so others don't have to guess. :)
You have the Services Menu plugin installed and it's picking up the OS
X system service Search With Google which is installed by Safari. That
action only works with Safari. Use one of the others I mentioned and
it will open in your default Firefox. See the web searches section of
the manual for details.

Thanks again. I'm actually talking about the "Search with Google"
action. Firefox is set as my default browser in
"Safari>Preferences". Yet when I type text into QS and then choose
"Search with Google" as the action, it opens Safari! Why?

Ah, you're talking about using the Search For... or Find With...
actions. No they only use the default web browser.
You could write an applescript action that takes text entered in the
first pane and constructs the appropriate google search url and opens
it in firefox. Then put it in ~/Library/Application Support/
Quicksilver/Actions/ so it's available as an action in the 2nd pane.

Thanks for your fast reply.
But is it possible to perform a Google search with QS using
Firefox as
the browser? It seems the methods you describe below are only
helpful
if I already know the URL.

The Open URL... action uses the system default web browser. This is
(non-intuitively) set in the Safari General preferences.
There's also the Open URL With... action which lets you pick a
browser
in the 3rd pane.
